Think Write Thursday – just do it


The Think Write Thursday prompt for February 16, 2017 is to write about something you’ve been putting off doing. We all have those tasks, projects, phone calls and more that we find excuses to avoid. What are you procrastinating about? And why? And, finally, how are you going to address it?
I am in a season of procrastination.  Truthfully, procrastination is part of my nature but this season, the last 3 or so months, I have ramped it up to a new level.  I don’t procrastinate about everything.  I have been quick to respond and take care of the things I do for family and at work.  But when it comes to taking care of me and my stuff, I have been wearing the blinders of avoidance 24/7.  

This weekend, I was in my car quite a bit.  That gave me time to listen to The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up.  I have resisted this book but it was a free audio download so I put it in my library.  And then I avoided listening to it.  But in a very short time, I knew I needed to hear what this author was saying.  Tidying up, decluttering, sorting and tossing.  These things have been much on my mind.  I have too much stuff that does not meet the “sparks joy” criteria.  There are bags here and there that just need to go to the donation store.  There are too many piles that just keep getting moved around.  I have a lot of extra space for this in my home, and while I know that many people complain of not enough space, it makes actually dealing with those piles harder – out of sight, out of mind.  But not really out of mind.  Knowing that that stuff is there weighs heavily.  And it becomes an excuse – oh I can’t do that until I deal with this.  Sigh.

I am one day away from a four day weekend.  There are a few commitments on my calendar but I also think there is time to make a dent in those piles.  And starting with my clothes is the perfect beginning.  So that is it.  I am tackling my closet and my drawers this weekend.  Let the tidying up begin.

  1. I think I am in a season of procrastination, too. Unfortunately my procrastination leads to me feeling completely overwhelmed by the task at hand. I was just thinking about this issue this morning and had decided it is time to re-engage 15 minutes at a time. I know it will make a difference. I just have to start somewhere. Your post has encouraged me to move forward today.

  2. We are starting a new Bible Study next week called Breathe; Making Room for Sabbath. It’s so much more than Sunday, its a way of life. She tackles the issue of too much stuff that keeps us distracted. I look forward to delving into it more.

  3. I guess I need to break down and read this book as well. I have been wanting to get started. You have inspired me! I hope your clothes project goes well this weekend. I have to wait as I’m headed to a dog agility trial this weekend. Maybe next week, LOL!

  4. I am a KonMari TRUE BELIEVER. I read the book when it first came out, and dove right in to the process. Although I was hesitant at first, I did find it rather . . . magical . . . once I got started. (And I’m about to start in again with another round!) Before you know it, you’ll be saying goodbye to lots of things that just don’t spark joy anymore! Enjoy. XO

  6. I luv your “season of procrastination” phrase…spring – the season to renew and clean” – is just around the corner so your plan to tackle your closet gets you a few steps ahead! Good “tidying” this weekend; know that we are on the sidelines to cheer you on…and look fwd to your report!

  7. I used to be a huge procrastinator at home too. But a friend shared with me something she read and I read it too — it was a simple little book about doing housework and such but the key thing the author suggested was not to attempt big projects or to attempt a big project with the expectation of finishing in one sitting/standing. Instead to set a timer to do 15 minutes or 30 minutes only. Timer goes off, move on to something else — or rest. I took that to heart and have been doing it ever since. Spring window cleaning, closet or drawer decluttering, fridge cleaning, etc I do now in those chunks and it’s amazing how I have quit procrastinating about doing them. It’s amazing what can be done in 30 minutes — time just flies by. Good luck with your plan!
