Sometimes Monday

is a good day for cleaning up. The sun is out, the laundry is on the line, and the afternoon stretches ahead without obligations.

One of my goals is to get on top of the housework. I am not very good at household chores. I do what needs to be done and ignore the corners. But I have a little party coming up in June and I decided to start tackling some of those corners so I won’t need to clean the whole house on the day before the gathering.

In addition to developing better cleaning routines, I have been wanting to try more environmentally friendly (less toxic) cleaners. A few weeks ago I gave this company a try. Many of the products are available in my local stores but it was fun to browse and order knowing there were “free” gifts involved. I love the Bon Ami and the walnut sponge. The glass bottle with silicone sleeve is also very nice (I may order a few more so I can have one in each bathroom). I’m not crazy about the scent of the Method cleaner but it doesn’t leave any residue which is a good thing.

Do you have favorite cleaning supplies? Or tips on housework? I’m off to check out some tips and lists on this site. And then, I’m thinking a book and in iced coffee will be in order.

  1. I’m not a terrific housekeeper, but I do like having a (relatively) clean house. Good for you for starting now so you won’t be overwhelmed in June before your party. I just got a new vacuum cleaner and find I can clean and dust much of the house with it; if only it could do the bathrooms, too!

  2. I don’t know if you’d include dish soap in your cleaners category, but there’s a really nice scent of Seventh Generation liquid dish soap that’s something like lavender and mint. I used to use it to wash my daughter’s bottles and such when she was a baby.

  3. I am with you on the cleaning – I am good at the surface stuff, but don’t look too closely in all the nooks and crannies. I like the Method cleaners – they are also very kind on the human who is using them! (And, my favorite for the kitchen is Bar Keeper’s Friend – it is the best on all the pots and makes my sink shine!)

  4. I have a total love-hate relationship with cleaning. (Love a clean house; hate the cleaning part.) We have two big parties each year. . . if we didn’t have them, I don’t know what would motivate me to keep up with the cleaning! XO

  5. Looks/sounds like we are all of a like mind. Loving a clean house but not liking the cleaning part. And, I’m another who is good at surface cleaning, but don’t look too closely – lol. Like Kat, I use a number of Method products and find they work well. And I’d be lost without Bar Keeper’s Friend – it realy makes copper shine!

  6. I liked the big picture ideas in this podcast to help me decide on the details that work for me: http://www.thelazygeniuscollective.com/lazy/cleanhouse I really connected with the idea of finding the rhythm that matches your priorities and existing routines. For example, I always sweep under table after every meal (hello toddler!) but sweep the whole house before bedtime. As a result, now I keep the broom by the table so it’s easy to sweep after meals and I have clean floors when I wake up.

  7. I do best with housekeeping when I do a little something each day. Retirement has made it much easier to tackle a few “deep cleaning” chores each month. Cleaning is not my favorite but I love a clean house. I use some Method products as well as baking soda and vinegar for some cleaning. I am exploring making my own cleaning mixtures with essential oils. My reference is a book, The Smart Mom’s Guide to Essential Oils.
